Ethanol's negative effects on my fuel system

This is a section of Mercury fuel hose pulled directly off the fuel water separator inside the cowling and threaded through the conduit hose to the primer bulb below-decks.

These brown pieces inside the gray hose are pieces of hose lining that have separated from the rest of the hose and are just 'freely sitting' inside the hose. If I blew on them, the pieces would blow away.

You can see how the brown stuff is tubular when undisturbed, but portions are missing and ended up in my fuel filters - clogging them and starving the engine of fuel.

This is what the hose looks like when it's not sliced up.
